BitchLand's Story & Development
I wanted to take this time to say some interesting things about BitchLand, how it came to exist, and how long it might take to get finished, and also about after it'll be technically done.
I started working on the actual game about 3 years ago, But I've had it on my mind for over 15 years! XD
Unlike most people that have had internet at home since the 90's, I only got internet at home about 6~7 years ago, a few years before the pandemic.
All my life I still had a computer, and 100's of games from dvd's, but just no internet, so once I had played and replayed every game, I'd sometimes mod a few of these games with this world I had been creating in my head, which was "bitchland".
I made the name "bitchland" back then, and not only it meant "land of bitches", it also meant "the land is a bitch (because it's post-apocalyptic)"
And over nearly 15 years, I had made So much "content" in this "bitchland", in my head this "world" is huge, there's so many areas, zones, characters, stories, so on.
In this world I would be the protagonist, and I'd explore this post-apocalyptic world, and gather "people" to build my city, and sometimes it'd work well, sometimes not. The very first time I tried it, was by modding some game's NPC's into a small fenced structure, But they managed to pathfind out of it, and so they "escaped", so that became lore. That's the "1st BL era" that Xoxa talks about in the actual game. And the unique characters that appear in the game and in statues, are actual characters I had come up with back then, throughout ~15 years. The other Eras and lore of the game is all based on my past "lore" from creating this world in mods or my mind when day-dreaming.
Around 3 years ago I saw an opportunity to actually start making this world into a real game, and so I designed the entire main plot/main story line first.
In my original imaginary BL, I was the protagonist, but in this game I wanted to give players the choice of playing as anyone, but still keep the lore intact. So I thought, what if "I" am now an NPC in the game, as the leader of the city so far, and then the Player will be "my son/daughter" which will now continue the story XD
So that's how it'll go, in the story I was the protagonist up to the time you start a new game, and now you (the player) are the new protagonist that continues the world.
Jeanne and Ely were a few of very first unique characters in this world, and they are important in the main plot, they will appear often. Beth was also one of the very first characters, but she will barely appear in the game, not because she didn't had content, but because I can't realistically put 15 years worth of content into the real game T-T, so right now I'm narrowing it down to the main plot only. And later once the game is "done", I could add more side stories for some of these left-overs.
I find it crazy how Jeanne, Ely, Beth, so on, are characters that I made over 15 years ago, and I still got them around, sometimes I almost forget they aren't real people XD Some other characters like Sarah are much more recent tho. Reminder that I "developed" this world throughout 15 years, not 15 years ago.
There are so many places in this world that I don't think I'll ever manage to put them all into the real game, but of the places I put, they still have the same design/layout they always had. The BL city's layout is the same from all these years, I know it better than the palm of my hand.
The player doesn't need to know all the backstory of the game, the important parts will be seen throughout gameplay and the missions, so it'll feel natural. And I also add little hints to past things, like in the Journal's Map, you can see some crossed-out and erased areas, those were places that actually used to exist in the lore before.
Without spoiling, this is roughly the entire main story missions for this game: (Some are missions and some are cutscenes)
Everything is planned out already, that makes it so much easier for me to create this game, I know exactly what thing I have to do next, instead of spending time thinking what to do next.
You can see there's a few things still undecided, but these are unimportant things, it's just a case of "Does this look better here or as a side mission?".
Zea's reasonably a new character, and she'll be important in the start of the game, I don't wanna spoil anything, but I'm quite proud of the story I put into her. I don't think most players will feel towards the game like I do, but sometimes I get myself so much into these stories, that I feel things I'd not expect to feel from an "adult game" XD
I'm pretty proud of this whole story and dialogue I've written for all missions&cutscenes, I hope I'll be able to portray it well into the actual game c:
Enough backstory, where's the new build?
Well, I divide the development stage of this game into 3 parts, Core features, Main missions, Open World.
The Core features (and main city), are essentially done, There's, a character creation system, a character control system, npc behaviour system, inventory system, weapon system, level up system, mission system, Sex system, so on.
So that 1/3 of the game is done.
I can add more to it sure, like more sex poses and such, but the feature is done.
So the rest that I'm working on are the [Main missions] and [Open World].
Over the past months I've made lots of progress on the main missions, But there isn't much I can show yet, they take longer to create than a feature.
And I can't exactly show an incomplete mission, So I'm working all I can to create these missions.
It would have made sense to work first on the missions in order as they are played, so I could be releasing builds, but I accidentally started working on all of them at the same time, So over the past few months, instead of completing a few missions, I did some progress on all of them. teehee.
I'm just so excited for them T-T
And again, I have them all planned out, I know exactly what to do for all of them, I never waste time thinking what to do next, I never get stuck not knowing what to do, this feels so liberating from other projects I've worked with in the past where developers stopped their projects because they didn't knew what to do next T-T
Anyway, over the past weeks I started focusing on the missions in order, so I can release a build sooner than later.
I wanted to add up to [Zea's trip], but that missions needs a big new area, so if that one's taking me too long I'll add just up to before it, and leave that one for the build after. Especially because I'd also like to make players only play that mission once some of the next ones are already available.
This is another thing that I must consider when releasing builds for missions, I don't wanna add up to a mission that shows an important piece of story, and then you'll have to wait a few more months for the continuation, by then you'll have forgot the important parts.
So I'll try to release builds when enough missions are in, that don't break the immersion. So you'll play throu these missions one-after-the-other and still be in context.
Especially the Zea missions, if I manage to portray them right, it's gonna be really epic. c:<
I've also been making some light progress on the open world. But it makes sense to only work on the Open world after the Main missions are done, Since that's how the plot follows, you play the main plot, and after that you can go out and start building your own city(s). And of course it'll still be possible to visit the original city.
Okay but I still want new build :d
I want to make a new build too, there's some bugs I've fixed, But it feels bad releasing another bug fixing build before a content build.
So I'm working extra hard for the next build with a few new missions and the important bug fixes T-T
At the start of the year I felt like I could finish this game by the end of the year. But we are already half past May, that's nearly half of the year gone, How did it passed so fast? :d
Well to be fair I was sick several times since then, sometimes straight up passed out for days, so that sucks. I'm always generally really sick at the start of every year. Last year I even had to call an ambulance on myself once, and this year I was reeeally close to doing the same.
Either way, I survive, so progress continues.
Funny thing a few weeks ago btw, when I'm sick (but still conscious) I can still think about progress and make some progress on the game, But a few weeks ago, I had an experience that reminded me of times like a decade ago, something more debilitating than being sick XD I saw a pretty girl outside and felt love on first sight, that single event made me unable to think clearly for a day straight. You can see me describing the event in more detail on #chat in my discord.
Anyway, after making a new bl character inspired on her (like the good ol'days), progress continues.
I don't know how long it'll take me to make the next build. Could be a week, could be more (I hope it's not more, but there's only so much I can do) But I Never stop, this is what I do All the time, I have the project constantly open, I think about it when I go sleep, when I wake up, when I'm going somewhere, when I'm playing a game to chill, when I'm eating, so on.
If anyone want's this game done, that's me, I more than anyone want to make this game already. I want people to experiece this great main plot story that I made for the game, and after that I want people to have fun with the open world.
Please join the discord so you can see random screenshots of development, and other rants I do sometimes. Especially if you're a patron, so you can access #private-chat for some more content. https://discord.gg/QjjXAyfwEU
I'm sure there's more things I wanted to talk about that I forgor, but it's good enough for now.
Well, idk how to end this post, I will return to making bl real now, see ya.
